Thats a real pain aint it? I had a similar wiring thing when that nice RAC man helped locate the trouble. He cut the wire and it was just rust in there. A section about 1cm long and it was carrying the current...just about.
He cut it out and spliced the wire back together and it was fine. I hope yours tunes out to be so simple to sort out mate.

have you actualy replaced the relay itself ?
