Been riding since 1987 and I bought an SV in March - so I suppose the short answer is that there isn't a natural progression, it depends what sort of bike you fancy riding if you're getting bored with the SV really.

Trouble is we can tell what we like / bought, but the problem is then you might end up with a bike that somebody else likes and that you dont.

Some idea of

Budget
What you want to use the bike for i.e.

Commuting
Scratching
Track Days
Touring

etc etc will definately help

My older brother went from sv650 to an R6 which he enjoyed but didn't have for long he couldn't really get along with it as a bike so he went and bought a Aprilia Tuono in my opinion was the best bike he has ever owned...

get one of them

I'm still some months away from the same decision, but at the moment I'm thinking that a VFR800 might work well for me. Fast enough to be fun, but capable of carrying a whole pile of luggage for longer trips. Of course I'll probably keep the SV for commuting to work when the sun shines

Keith.

I use the SV mainly for commuting, but need the bike to be comfy 2 up fast but not uncomfortable, more of a sports tourer.

Whatever you think looks the best. Unless it's a Honda - I can't quite bring myself to buy an 06 'blade.
