Some inspired ideas there folks. I knew it was worth while asking you all for help in this rather silly, but exciting adventure. ![]() |

I have now cut the tubes along with the mitres in the ends and the bike is almost ready to be welded. I have a twenty inch from wheel and a twenty six inch rear wheel, so this thing should fly along pretty well.
![]() ![]() playing with a grinder was great fun. ![]() I also finally settled on the name for my creation. ![]() Cheers for that Soulkiss, as you can see I have mocked up the graphic in marker pen on the old paint. I have to make up the seat for it next, which will require a bit of foam, a lump of ply and a pretty, water proof cover. ![]() ![]() So far I have used three frames rescued from a skip to build this bike and have not yet had to pay for a thing. I love building new bikes out of scrap, it is so Scrapheap Challenge! I just wish I could weld, for that though I will have to see my mate Wayne and persuade him with a beer or three to weld it up soon. ![]() Oh, just in case you think I look a bit rough in the picture, I was recovering from Piggy Flu. ![]() |

My mate Wayne (he of amazing ZX10, soon to be turbo'ed, ownership
![]() ![]() I have a friend at work who is well in LARP and has a load of spare leather left over from costume making, that he is going to dig out for me to sow into a seat cover. That should be nice and hard wearing (especially on my fingers! ![]() ![]() So far this bike has been made from scrap, bike frames that were unwanted and now some Ply wood from our local builder who was going to chuck it in a skip. Anyway, have a look at the Video that Carol took of us marking the frame up for welding. It is all very exciting. Wonder if I can chop the SV like this, although I think a BMX wheel on the front may not be strong enough! ![]() |

So I pulled three bikes out of a skip, my very good friend Wayne welded them together for me and amazingly, given that I cut and shaped the tubes, got the frame straight. Once back home it was given a lovely coat of dark green Hamerite that Carol found in the garden shed and once the paint had dried I starting bashing bits onto it.
![]() Now there would not be a lot of point in building a prototype and making it stunning to look at if it rode like a pig with rabies, so this whole process is about development and the rough and ready rat bike on the pic is now about to enter stage two and thus become Death Trap Mark two. ![]() Cheers to Soulkiss for the name, you can't see the front tube on the bike, but lovingly drawn on in black marker pen it reads "Death Trap" and has a picture of the Grim Reaper with a scythe. The whole drawing took me minutes... ![]() Anyway, as projects go, this one has been a lot of fun and still has a long way to go until it is in a full ridable condition. I am still to work out how to run the chain, sort the steering mechanism (not sure if I want under seat steering or over seat steering), fix the back rest, remove the useless shock and replace with a steel bar, sort out the front dérailleur and repair the stripped bottom bracket threads. All of this I can do, but not in one afternoon while drinking Stella! ![]() ![]() The initial test ride showed me that the head angle was too steep and so by dropping it back we could make the steering less twitchy and more stable in turns. Making Carol run along pushing me (with a fag in her mouth!) while I worked out the adjustable head angle was a laugh a minute for her, but she is a patient soul with me. Loves you Babes ![]() Anyway, a huge thanks to my mate Wayne for welding it up for me and doing an absolutely first rate job on tubes rescued from a skip. Plus thanks to Carol for photos and letting me turn the sitting room into a workshop. ![]() |
