Miles,

If you insist on going for a large wide screen in this price range then the first thing that I suggest you do before putting any money down is to pick it up from the sides and give it a bit of a twist. If it creaks and groans or doesn't feel solid, put it down and walk away. It'd only give you problems later.

Also have a think about springing for a better operating system.

Cheers

Really? All of our Toshiba laptops are still going strong. It's our Dells that all seemed to develop the same fault just out of the warranty period

What's that then? Getting too hot and shutting down frequently?

I used to work for a Acer warranty supplier (who eventually dumped Acer and signed a deal with IBM!) and I could say the same about Acer. They are all as bad as each other like the majority of car manufacturers, various models suffer various faults. Personally I rate HP, IBM and Fujitsu Siemens for build quality, but don't know what IBM are like now that they are Lenovo as I've moved companies who primarily supply HP kit rather than primarily IBM as it was in my old company. I think Dell's are really flimsy.

Acer do have some poor practices though, such as refusing to write a new BIOS to support switching on Intel VT and allow you to run 64bit virtual machines on the laptop, but they were still happy to advertise "Core 2 Duo" on the box, but you couldn't use the processor features. To me that's like advertising and selling a car with front fog lights, but not putting a switch on the dashboard.

My wife's Sony Ericsson was back in for repair four times in the first six months, that's supposed to be a quality phone. Several ROM flashes, new battery and new PCB and it seems to be working OK now.
