That would be the chain slapping about if you get close to stalling it and the engine is chugging.

Check the pads in the calipers are mounted properly on the steel springs in the top of the caliper body.

Ahh, cool, a reason - thanks YC. I'll have a look at the pads - would it be obvious if they're not mounted correctly (to someone who doesn't do their own servicing)?

It's fairly obvious where they should sit on the spring plates.

I have known this to cause a slight shudder. No idea why though. BUT it did it every time, not just under very hard use. I think you should go try brake hard and see what it does.

just a thought, possibly locked up the back wheel slightly causing it to 'skip', basically if it doesnt lose enough traction to slide, but kind of judders over the road?!
