Air's measured in volume
You're right though I did do it by air gap, I just used an engineers ruler - not sure if there's a more technical/exact method.

P.S you get out of sheff alright last night? The bottom of the road was police taped off this morning
Not unusual... but I did half expect to see some little scrote layed out next to a speed bump with a set of forks through his face.

Lol yeah fine.

Yes you are measuring air gap volume, but the air spring effect of 100cc will be different in a 28mm fork to a 50mm one, so better to measure air gap in mm.

Maybe worth measuring the forks to see if it's bottoming out? Adjust the preload and put a cable tie round one of the stanchions on the forks (not too tight) then after a hard ride see how close the cable tie has pushed up to the bottom yoke. Will give you an idea of which way/how much to adjust the preload.

Or is it measured in specific volume, density, pressure, mol, entropy, enthalpy etc?
If you really want to complicate things...

A simple length is much easier to work with.

Hence why I used a ruler
Just was trying to excuse my shoddy post!

Just remember that it's measured no springs, full compression, otherwise you'll end up with virtually solid forks!
