The solenoid contacts are inside the unit & therefore out of sight. As they carry a fair bit of current they gradually burn. Slow cranking is usually the first sign that they're on their way, but this doesn't always occur.

Cheers.
Spannerman, thanks for that, but if this is the case, would it not 'slow crank on every start?
At present 99% of the time it is immediate normal start, only 2wice have we had the problem where it seems like there is v.low battery power, as though there is not enough power to turn the engine over.???

Good morning all.

As with every other electrical gremlin symptoms are not always consistent. So, there's no definitive answer.

Years ago I had a Trophy 1200, which occasionally would slow crank, often releasing the starter button & trying again would get it to crank normally.

The solenoid finally gave up the ghost on a day when it was 90 degrees in the shade, (bump starting that WAS fun). I replaced the solenoid with a secondhand Yamaha one, & not only did it behave impeccably from then on, it also cranked slightly faster at all times than it did with the original solenoid.

As I said, try bridging it next time, if it still slow cranks, it's most likely to be the starter motor.

Cheers.

That's on the Prilia, isn't it?

Try taking the rear seat plastics off, you'll see the reg/rec, starter solenoid. Check of dodgy connections.

Is that 13.5V on a separate volt meter or the built in one?

You can easily improve it, do the wire mod, it's a sticky on AF1.

Did you know the previous owner? If he use the bike occasionally and didn't use an optimate, the battery might be on it's way out. I had that, one day it just refused to do anything.

Dyz, nope intermittant starting probem problem is on the SV, am going to have to wait & see if it won't go again & try bridging the solinoid, see what that teaches me, don't want to buy a new one for £40 from wemoto then find it is something else, battery is fine readings from separate meter.
