so if the reg/rec is producing the right volts, what can he check or should he check after that? do u know? thanks so much for your help so far.

also, the horn on the bike doesnt work, ive been told by a few suzuki owners that if the horns wires are earthing this would take the charge
??

Loose magnets w00t?

Are you on about the alternator rotor? You not think these being loose may lead to some small problems at 10000rpm?

You should not have to be telling a paid mechanic what troubleshooting to go through. They sound like a bunch of cowboys. When you are doing the work on it yourself I will tell you what to check and how to do it!

thanks for your reply chris (need all the advice i can get here) ive been into the shop today and the 6 large rectangle magnets that it around the inside of the magento are loose, they can be pulled off, i rang suzukiGB and they said this is not right they need to be attatched permanently to the side of the magento. the garage/shop is ordering a new magneto (think there around £190) brand new and when it arrives they are taking it from there.

normal practise?

Good afternoon all.

The mere fact that he refered to it as a Magneto points to a little incompetence. I suspect he's refering to the alternator rotor. However, the magnets shouldn't be loose. So after the fitment of the new one, do an AC voltage test on the alternator.
Un-plug the regulator rectifier, & with the engine running you should have around 75 volts AC between any pair of the three feed wires that come from the alternator. (They will be either yellow or white).
Make sure none of the three wires have continuity to earth, & finally check for continuity between any of the three wires & its two counterparts. There should be little or no resistance between them.

With the battery disconnected, check for continuity between the red output wires on the regulator plug, & the positive battery lead. Again, little or no resistance should be found.

If the above all checks out ok then your regulator is probably goosed.

Cheers.

Hi spanner man,

Thank you for your input, the new part is on order and hopefully arrive tomorrow.

Were those tests for the reg/rec and for the alternator? From what he tells me the generator is fairly new and the magneto/alternator rotor needed replacing, so as i said thats on order.

once this is fitted i will make sure he does all the checks u pointed out (hopefully he should know himself)

ps: if only i knew about your shop, as im only in chiswick, and im sure if i left it in your hands it wouldnt still be in the garage 9 days later with a part on order that he wanted me to order myself

any more feedback is greatly appreciated

What do you mean the generator is fairly new? You are looking at half of it there. Other half is coils of wire which fit inside that part and do not spin around, they are bolted to side casing.

anyone got a dummies for mechanics book lol?

Trust me i WILL NOT ever be going back to this shop, never had any problems like this b4 in 8 yrs

1 is stator coils
2 is rotor with magnets fixed inside

Ah right, now i know what im looking for.

From what i can make out, the stator coils are in very very good condition but ihave had to change the alternator rotor cos the magnets around the outside were loose and you could pull them off.

So once this is fitted, he's to run tests on it yes? n if thats giving out the correct readings then test the voltage from the battery with the engine running and at different rpms? to detect if the bike is producing enough volts to charge the battery?

very very good condition?
They will look nice and clean because they are inside engine!

If they go wrong then they can either look fine, or be obviously burnt, corroded, on fire etc. Big check for stator is to use multimeter, there should not be continuity to earth.
