my SV has this idling trouble, and when i open the throttle too quick it cuts off. starting to get abit on my tits as i look like an **** when i goto pull away and putt. *shakes head* plus i just let it idle for a while and the revs drop right down until the bike is about to cut out and it then jumps back to normal idle.

UPDATE

Been out in the garage tonight and started checking some more things. Took the airbox apart and got to the secondary throttle values and especially the STP sensor. The workshop manual says when it's closed it should read 580ohm but mine was showing 1200ohm. I have adjusted it as much as I can but it's still showing 680ohm. Anyway resassembled the bike and it now seems to fast idle

So with any luck I think I have sorted the starting problem and mabe the poor running. It was late so I couldn't run the bike for long but I will run it up tomorrow and reset the idle and then the TPS again. Hopefully after all that it should be running much better.

Has anyone had any experience of the secondary TV sensor, is the 100ohm difference going to be important? Should I order a replacement sensor? All thoughts welcome!

100 ohms is about 15% difference which is probably out of tolerance but if the bike works and runs fine just leave it. Perhaps give it a check again otherwise leave.

Right actually passed my test today HORRAH. Went out this afternoon and gave the bike a proper run.

I have adjusted the secondary throttle valve sync and made sure they are closing properly and stuff. It all seems pretty good now and the power feels fairly smooth, seems to build around 5000rpm, is this the general way the SV rides?

The only problem I have now is it still doesn't like starting after it has been left for a while. It takes about 5-6 goes to start, each time it starts after a few rotations and runs for about 5 seconds before it dies. The last start it doesn't die and it sits there idling @ 1000rpm, after a few minutes it seems to fast idle properly. If I touch the throttle at all before it starts to fast idle it just dies...

I know it's a bit random but any ideas people? The only think I noticed when I'm trying to start it early on is when it stalls the fuel pump primes again immediately and takes a few seconds. I thought the fuel pressure wouldn't be that low at this point though...

All ideas welcomed

She runs though - and I can ride!

Good morning.

Often overlooked when assessing running problems are the valve clearances. They're not too much of a pain to check, but adjusting them requires a little experience, & a good torque wrench amongst other things.

Cheers.

I think because the SV doesn't seem to need adjiustment that often. Complacency didn't kill the cat but it sure can kill engines...

You can get away without a torque wrench for checking them. Definately need one for adjusting them though.

You would be surprised. They quite often can run tight especially on the rear cylinder (which runs hotter) and this can cause starting problems.

Would you believe a decent run out and a fresh tank of fuel and she is starting perfectly even in these extremely cold mornings! I think the fuel in there must have been over 6 months old so maybe it seperated or had some crap in it!

Thanks for all the advice and ideas guys
