With a cheap car (or any car really) you do take your chances with what your going to get

Jenn was looking at a new (for her) cheap car upto £900 so I gave her mine in the end as I knew it was ok and had everything it had ever needed done to it, rather than buying someone elses problems.

It really is a gamble

K- cheers.

Re the Mk3 Gold- i'd probably be looking at a 1.6 as I'd want to do some distance to Wales/Lakes etc for the odd hilly hike- think I'd need a bit more go for that. But I don't need a speed demon- I've got a bike to have fun on. More something that's nice enough to drive, has a bit of space in the back and a few mod cons (CD changer, heating, maybe sunroof).

Don't write off Fords too quickly, I used to have a 1994 Fiesta which I ragged relentlessy for about 20k miles it finally started to go a bit wrong at 120k
Also had a few escorts that have made it into high mileages. My Galaxy is now on about 93k (bought cheaply with no service history) and the only thing that's gone wrong on it was the drive belt snapped

Agreed, if you are going Petrol 1.6 or 1.8 is what you want, it still wont set the earth on fire though. Dont foget the also do a 1.9 Diesel with to, IIRC 90bhp... might well give better performance & Economy over a small petrol engine.

Something like this...

Can't beat the reliability of a VW. If you keep it nice, you can easily make money off it selling it in the summer. Insurance should be OK since its only a 1.5, and not the GTI

VW? reliable? lol. If you want reliability, buy Japanese, or the Koreans are a close second and cheaper.

VW's really are reliable, and the parts are readily available. My MK1 golf caddy has 138k on the clock and has never needed anything other than the top mounts replaced. Starts first time and goes through the gears smooth as anything.

The Jap/German debate is a big one...each to their own!

It's not really a debate. It's just simple statistics. But I agree it's up to each person to make their mind up, and this isn't really the subject of this thread.
