lol I meant not so bad as in, not as bad as if it were in front of all my friends and family and she said no. My nickname would be changed to "rejected" and until the end of my days I'd never live it down lol.

Hide it in the birthday cake, am sure it will go down well

Sorry am I not helping?

Personally I'd do as DB says. If the element of surprise is not really there seeing as she's expecting it then you might as well get something she'll like, the number of couples who seem to end up getting rings resized or swapped after the gesture, takes the shine of the whole proposal thing surely?

I think get her a nice ring if you can. Take a look at her jewlerry and see if you can spot a pattern to what she likes

I think proposing in front of a big group of close family and freinds is a great idea I proposed to maria when we were on our own

My dad told me to ask her dad for permission aswell, I dunno if you want to do this but its a nice tradition i think and shows a bit of respect, sort of thing

I guess you can ask us lot all you like, but you more then anyone else knows what she likes.

Personally I think it is a private thing between two people, then to be shared, but she may like the grand gesture infront of all her friends. Remember though it is for you too, are you going to be ok with asking her infront of a crowd, or would you feel more at ease with just the two of you?

I originally put get the ring, without reading the story, again, if you think she would get the joke then by all means do the jelly ring thing. As has been said it is a cute story to tell in the future.

Rest assured though the ring will want to follow quickly after that though, if she is anything like me, the jelly ring may be eaten before a replacement could be found

Good luck though.

Nah, take it from a woman...don't try gauging on her jewellery box, sparkly objects of engagement are entirely a different kettle of fish

Anna, her friends all think of me as a bit daft anyway they thank me for bring Abi out of her self a little bit. Ive not even considered about getting shy infront of them I dont think (hope) it'd be an issue. After all they're the ones who'll be at the wedding anyway lol.

Congrats to you Matt!

I'm kind of old fashioned, so I got a ring made, and got down on one knee in a nice restaurant where we'd gone for a meal with her parents and one of her brothers.
In my mind (and it transpires, hers as well), it shows total commitment by doing that - both emotionally and financially.

A lot of my friends have asked their girlfriends to marry them and then bought a ring together. A couple of them have got the girl to go and buy a ring, give it to the bloke and he proposes when he feels the time is right.

She will say yes, so it's just a matter of doing it as you like.

As for the ring size. Well, the wedding ring finger on the right hand is slightly larger than the wedding finger. If she wears a ring on that finger (my wife (girlfriend at the time) did, so I got hold of that ring when she was in the shower, I pushed it down a number of fingers and made a mental note of how far it would go on, then when I was in the shop, I used their sameple rings to work out the size. As it happens, I got it right, though I didn't worry too much - I thought I'd get it about right and I could have it amended if necessary.
To this day, my wife still believes that I got a bit of string out and wrapped it around her wedding finger when she was asleep...

Do let us know how it goes tho. If you can engineer it to be in a place where there is a webcam, again, let us know and we can share the excitement.
