Welcome to the club

I used to wear contacts all the time but never got on with them too well on the bike, and once I started at my current place of work, had to stop wearing them because of the air conditioning.
Strangely, I felt quite self conscious when I started wearing my glasses again (I'm not the sort of person that lacks confidence or anything like that!) but after 6 months I stopped caring completely.

Glasses? Big deal - I already have a cane, am on the list for a dog. I had my eye condition picked up in a routine eye test about 16 years ago. Didn't cause me any problems then but, as predicted, I'm now losing my eyesight and will eventually go blind. But if it hadn't been picked up, I would never have gone out and got my bike license, bought the car I'd always wanted, be doing my masters degree or have my son.

My brother, who knew hat he had a 1:4 chance of having the same condition as me didn't heed the warning and get his eyes tested for 20 years. Then he started complaining of blurry vision - he wanted to see his optician, I got him in to see my consultant. guess what? And the horror is that even thought he knows about it he's still driving. I hope he doesn't have an accident.

Yep thats a really good point about routine eye tests picking up any potential eye conditions.... I should be grateful that I at least got the all clear on that front and my vanity makes me feel quite guilty!

Guys you`ve actually made me feel a whole lot better and have turned a negative into an extremely postive situation for me, many thanks x

I must admit, I was suprised to be told that I need glasses but they have proven their worth - I'm now at the point where I don't think about them any more and feel strange on the short occasions when I don't wear them (feels like something is missing). The annoying thing for me is speaking to the vain people who refuse to wear them after they've told you how bad their eyes are - there are people who I've refused to get a lift with because of it.

Eyesight deteriorates over 40 yrs old. My dad had perfect vision for yrs, then bang, he started not being able to read properly. These days he screws his eyes up if you show him anything small. Thankfully it went that way rather than distance.

I have funny eyes. One eyes prescription is totally opposite end of the scale to the other. If I got poked in the good eye by some bee in my helmet I'd be screwed!!
My crap eye depends highly on the other doing all the work. Although pretty stable, every now and again they change for the worse.
I have been told on a good day I would pass the eye test for driving, but if the crap eye is being lazy I have no chance, so should really wear specs for riding, well I can't really bare to be without them off my face for more than an hour these days anyway.

The only thing I have to watch for is the floaters I get in my crap eye, they are like little grey spots that appear sometimes. The optician gives you such an uplifting feeling when he says....although rare, please be aware that floaters can be a sign of a detached retina....ehhhhhhhhhh!!!!! But of course you will notice more floaters and more often...oh JOY!! lol.

I think the main thing is bugger the vanity... i`ll be safer on the roads and if this thread makes just one more person think ok I`ll stop ignoring the nagging concerns and go get my eyes tested only to find their vision is poor then it`s been a good thread.

Claire you will look lovely ! Glasses now are like shoes. I have a wikkid black and white pair for work too go with my uniform.

I now wear my contacts less and less. (altho I have more confidence without my specs). But yes the important thing is you can see and you are safe, don't want our Speedy getting hurt
