Interesting thoughts, the guy who built my engine is one of Loris Capirossi's mechanics.

We run all ours in on the dyno. Normally allowing the bike to come upto 80-90oc and a few gentle runs. Then let it cool down. Repeat twice more and on the third run with the engine upto temp let the bike rev out in 2nd gear upwards. Cool down and then once more.
Can be done on a test day, make sure the bikes fully upto temp and remains upto to temperature during the sessions (important not to let the temp drop especially if its wet as the SV is prone to cold seizing especially on the front cylinder if your running no thermostat). Just let the bike rev freely, dont labour it or hold it on the limiter. Alot of running in proceedures are mainly down on road bikes to run the whole bike in, not just the motor. Fully synth/semi doesnt matter. |

![]() i thought gentle running in was to ensure the cams and things where gently smoothed. Reading a few manuals, it says that you shouldnt hold constant revs (not likley on a track!) and like rotax said, let it heat, cool, heat, cool. Guy Martin said something once about running in a rebuilt engine, I can't remmber what. I rmember talking to lozzo about a ZX10r he helped spanner; they ran the engine from new gently, then changed the piston rings and thrashed it like hell |

I was told by Yamaha that the Oil for running in should be bog standard crappy Mineral cheap stuff to allow the engine to bed in. After 600 miles of running on that the engine is sorted and expensive Oil can then be used that prevent further wear. Putting fantastic oil in a new engine can actually prevent it from running in.

Three 15 minutes sessions is all it takes to break in motor. You want constant load on motor, either on throttle or off, not keeping it at same rpm's. First time you rev it up to 8k rpm's, next time up to 9k and third time start looking where rev limiter is. Let motor cool down between runs those runs. Change oil and filter and beat crap out of it
![]() ps. watch out on temperature with those pistons. |

(im not sure how true that story is, it seems like a really silly and huge mistake to make) |
