Good afternoon all.

Could this be a case of the foam dropping off the bottom of the tank & blocking the airfilter methinks.

Cheers.

If you left the ignition on overnight I would suspect that you've probably cooked the coils. They are quite likely now to be shorting and draining the battery when you try to start the bike, and also failing to provide enough, if any. power to give a spark at the plugs. The loud bang may well be the result of an accumulation of unburnt fuel in the cylinder igniting in response to a weak or erratic spark from an unreliable or completely goosed coil.

knowing him I think he has probably bought the wrong air filter and tried to jam it in, either that or you have finally found the curse of ebay. Well at least you got it working again which is a plus point. Let me know if I can help.

Dunno, I've done the same trick before, I don't think the coils are actually energised except during measured dwell time by the ignitor box to avoid this.

Sure the live is permanent but I don't think the switched earth allows current to flow all the time.

You may well be right there YC. My thinking is the result of years of riding bikes with points ignition and the possibility of frying the coils by leaving the ignition switched on. Mind you, on the magneto ignition bikes I had you couldn't do that.
