As I said, you would have thought somebody would be working on the problem, so it is no surprise to find that the brains behind the work I was doing 25 years ago is still at it and concentrating more on the recognition of bogus coins. See here for his patent stuff.

When I was working in the field, we were using the decay in induced magnetic eddies to identify coins. But it look like Geoff has done a lot more work with pulsed and high/low frequency and stepped current changes to generate more characteristics relating to coin/token properties.

So people, the technology is out there, it just needs the incentive of the financial institutions to do something and make my old work colleague very rich.

sorry if the above is a tad geeky

Perhaps they were if you are working in the field of identifying fakes.

It is a bit like the web site (I am not going to tell you were it is) that holds computer viruses. If you are looking at testing/identifying problems etc. Sometimes you need to throw a live one against the defences.

It was on "Fake Britain" on BBC the other night too. Quite interesting.

I remember getting one many years ago, it was quite poor, slightly the wrong diameter, and it was soft. When you hit real ones together they "clink", this one "thunked".

You can fake 10p coins by filing the corners off a 50p. Whatever happened to the thrupenny bit?
