If you don't fancy the really heavy "Stomp" grips, Motrax are now doing clear pads for the sides of the tank called "Chicken Fillets" on account of their shape.......

Or do as I do, ebay for carbon fibre sheet, A4 size and cut your own. Done it on my black Sv and reckon it looks good, cheap to!

Have to say the techSpec snakeskins look like the best bet. Like the fact they can be removed, repositioned.
I am sure the tank cover would offer better protection but it reminds me of those 'car bras' that those hideous americans fit to the front of their cars

to rub scratches that aren't down to the metal out:
