Scotland, but I might not say the same if you chose a different destination.

Krakow is nice, but what I've seen of the rest of Poland (Warsaw, Katowice and anything you can see from the windows of the train that runs from Prague to Warsaw) the rest of the country is pretty grim. A lot of it looks like something from a WWII film, any second you expect a Panzer to come rolling round the corner.

If you are going to Krakow then go via the Czech Republic and visit Prague.

Poland used to be like turning the clock back 50 years.Make sure you have good security and the Panzers are still there, just fallen into the potholes.I have not visited since they have joined the Euro so everything will now have gone up in price----
including the women.
I used to transit en route to Russia and loaded back for the Polish Bacon Co so have been all over and it can be grim. It is not all like the pretty Tourist Office Brochures,
but then no place is

Well we were thinking we could go and pop in and see my cousin who lives in the Warsaw area, but if Poland is that bad then as sugested may go to Prague then down to Budapest, as both of those are supposed to be good. EDit, funds permitting of course.

I've only seen what I've seen, and that was only just after they joined the EU, so a good few years ago. I was working in Krakow for a while taking advantage of the cheap labour

Is that what you call it in your house

I went to Poland in 1984, train from Prague to Krakow (which I thought was a bit disappointing) and then train to Warsaw - which is fantastic, I love the rebuild old town - and then train to what was then West Berlin. I remember seeing ploughs drawn by cattle or horses, it was that backward. Would love to go back. They do good beer too, Zweck IIRC.

The beer is lethal, often 8 or 9%, then you get a Vodka chaser dropped on the bar with it. Poland bought me many a flight home used to sleep off the hangover.
