Headphone recomendations

JBL headphones are always a good bet.

Ive seen a lot of good reviews from skullcandy too.

If it were me I would look online for budget and reviews, pick a good selection then head out with the ipod and listen to them its the only way to be sure. I did then when I bought an MP3 player...

I like HD25 headphones I use them for sound recording they are lush.

I have a set of Beats Studio headphones, and also a set of Sennheiser HD465 headphones, which only cost about £50, probably less nowadays, but I have to say the Sennheiser are fantastic, had I not got the Beats for christmas id not have replaced them. Low end on them is fantastic, clear as. If I got given £50 and told to buy headphones I'd not think twice of buying another set.

They look big, but they are like super comfortable ear muffs that make sound. Very light design. Get some strange looks while wondering around with them on tho

I just got a set of SoundMagic PL18s. Earbuds, like Skull Candy (have a pair of these too), but they're better on balance and detail. Very comfy too.

Not too bass-extended- but that depends what you're into. Apparently PL11s have more bass and PL30s (more expensive) have controllable bass boost.

I've been looking into this for a decent pair of headphones for not too much cash- Sound Magic tend to get good reviews.

They are in my opinion superb headphones. Really comfy. I use them for my e drums and also for monitoring when recording in my studio. Whilst not cheap, they are certainly not the most expensive and you do get what you pay for! These ones are high impedance at 250 ohm and wouldn't be very good with an ipod. They do much lower impedance versions though.
The beauty of these over ear/ closed back phones is that you can actually try them out beforehand unlike in ear buds. I'd recommend going to a decent hifi or pro music shop and try several out to find out what suits you best. It's such a personal, subjective thing sound. What I think sounds great, you might think sounds like a bag of sh!te.

They have to be overhead, as i say the in ear ones i have and all the previous ones i had irritate my ear canal in which they sit. Yes i love my HD's and they are very nice to listen to, but on the tube etc, im after something maybe not as detailed but with a little more bass extension as the tube noises kill them from the Ipod. Also the 70ohm impedance is not very condusive to the ipods lowish output. My in ears are just cheap Philips, well, they were £25 and i like thier sound. The mid bass is quite relaxed which is the only criticism, but as good as the more expensive MDR74's from Sony which i had a couple of sets of.

This is possibly the hardest thing you can do for the sort of price range im looking at. I went out yesterday and picked a selection of cans that i liked the look of and the spec met what im looking for, but would they take them out of the box and let you listen...No!

I listened to a few SH one on the stand at the store, but none really floated my boat sound wise. Certainly now were as good as the HD25's even though thats not what im looking for.

Well, they came last night. I finally plumped for the AKG k450's. After listening to about 6 sets in various places (I still cant believe how hard it is to listen to headphones) i decided that the sound, fit and price were right for the AKG's.

I must admit that over the past few weeks i was really getting to liking the HD25's sound and was using them as a comparison. But they were bulky and i didn't really want to damage them.

So what are the 450's like? Compared to the HD25's the mid bass is a little more prominent and the vocals a little warmer. The Bass response is astonishing and very pronounced compared to the HD's. However, on more subtle tracks its just there and not in ya face. On dance stuff, its nice and deep and very well controlled. Overall, considering they they cost a 3rd of the HD25's then i will say im impressed. In the box comes a case for them (They fold up) a variety of leads and adaptors. Compared to the other sets i listened to, they had the better sound overall. I tested the JVC's and Pioneers i listed above, along with some WCSC, some skull candy's, Denon, Sony, Senheisser and some other brand which i can not remember. All priced around the £40-£50 mark. I got the AKG's from Ebay off the Currys outlet store for £40 delivered.
