and don't worry about rain getting into the filters. Consider it "water injection" and that actually adds power.

Oh yeah recent experience suggests that with aftermarket filters, the presence of a teaspoon of sand, 50 midges and a wasp can adversely effect fuel consumption. Suggesting that the filter should be cleaned more than once every 10,000 miles!

Is that true? I was worried about hydraulic lock or whatever it's called.

Defo the case, my trumpet covers on my old car used to get ditched, a significant difference was made by just cleaning and oiling the trumpet covers

How heavy is this rain?

Yes if you ride into a river and the filters go under you get hydrostatic lock but not with raindrops. The filters would get wet from the raindrops and this would then be drawn into the engine as water vapour from it evapourating from the speed of 650cc x however many rpm of air flowing through them.

In water injection the water cools the fuel mixture allowing more in leading to greater power.

I think we were dumping something like a pint a minute of water/methanol into an escort turbo with N2O on it and you can use a sh*tload more before anything bad happens.

Think how much water something like a SRAD with air holes big enough to lose a small monkey down must inject when doing 150mph in the p*ssing rain? I've done it on a K2 and nothing bad happened, didn't get wet above 120 or so

Though water/blackbird injection should be avoided as the mince and feathers clog the air filter.

Cool, that's set my mind to rest a bit then, it was my main worry.

Some bikes, not many, can be improved by removing the air box, on those that can it's not 'cos the airbox is badly designed, it's because the air intake system was also part of the noise regulation - the manufacturer is required to sell you a bike that conforms to noise regs, that's achieved in may ways.

Spent an evening with a second opinion who says im just being fussy, not rich.

No fumy smell, even in exhaust fumes.
No moisture or deposit in the fumes.
Nothing of note.

So that's no longer an issue! I was mainly interpreting the 'chuggy' running of a v twin as it not running smooth. Can't remember why i was convinced it was rich...

Seeing as my bike is at 22K and the previous owners (i got it about 18K) seemed to ignore changing just about anything (the buggers). I am sure the stock filter is full of crap so I am thinking drop a K&N filter in there for servicing more than anything. That and some new spark plugs. I do have a scorpion race can and although just a slip on, seems silly to not be thorough. Then based on the feedback the bike gives me I'll tweak tune and do the lot! Had a minor victory today that means i'll have the money to do the work so i'm happy.

Can anyone tell me what this is all about? LINK

Someone just made the inlet bigger to get more air in. I don't know if that's really that beneficial as k&ns after market filter keeps the aperture the same shape as the standard, surely there's a reason for it?

That's De-snorkelling (and that is then tidied up with a Stanley knife and sandpaper) Drill around the internal side of the filter (making sure you don't hit the filter element) and cut it out, then tidy up the lip and increase the mains to either 160's or 162.5's depending on exhaust.
