Tates in a tub will be fine, carrots in a tub - you need a ready supply of unused durex, (use used if you like but I find they give a funny after taste!). Dib hole in compost, choice of tool is up to you but I find laying face down first thing in the morning on a grow bag with a copy of Razzle seems to leave the required indentation. Put durex in hole, open end to top, fill with compost, place one seed, carrot or other on top, lightly cover with more compost. In three months time, grab rolled end of durex and withdraw from soil, hey presto you're own veg ready wrapped !

Good luck.

I used to love my garden, it used to be full of flowers and was so pretty. Then I got really into bikes, and now it resembles YCs garage floor! And Bob the dog tramples over everything. Last year it really took a turn for the worse, as I was rather delicately pregnant and wasn't allowed to do anything strenous

Today I filled a one tonne rubble sack with weeds! My garden will look nice again. Afraid I can't grow any veggies, as its a little small, and theres too many cats round here that bury things, plus Bob likes carrots so is likely to dig em all up.

Yup, I like my garden too, both the veg plot and the decorative type of gardening. Just been up on the veg plot today and, aided by some friends who arrived with 20 odd bags of well rotted horse muck, cleared the last of the weeds and put a thick mulch of the horse poo on the bed that will be taking all the legumes.
Tomorrow I shall take a look in my tub of seed packets and see if I have any useable seeds left from last year before going and getting the rest of the seeds I need from town.

Trouble is the variety you want is never in stock... A nice post-Christmas activity is sitting back with a warming drink of an evening perusing the seed catalogues/websites deciding what to grow before making an order. Better choice that way plus you can get hold of stuff the garden centres rarely stock, like heat treated onion sets.

does it really get under your skin that much.
This started out as a bit of fun with the kids ,now I find myself going out with my brew in the morning to see if anything has changed from yesterday

If you start planning to enter competitions or becoming self sufficient you're probably going a bit too far. Otherwise it's just good fun, and cheaper/tastier than petrol...

Hey dude, I work in the biggest plant nursery in Scotland, we tend to find that plants if left in "ideal" conditions, in our case, temperature controlled polytunnels, with automatic irrigation, will grow too quickly and become leggy and unable to support their own weight. After this point, its very difficult to do anything about it, so what we tend to do is as the plants become reasonably established, we move them outside, the cold and the wind helps to harden them up and produces a stronger plant. In terms of keeping stuff in pots, keep it wet, and remember that there's limited nutrients in a pot which aren't being replenished naturally, you'll need to provide a feed manually!

Slug pellets all the way! I hate the little fokkers! and the snails too. And I'm an animal loving leftie too but those little buggers will NOT EAT MY GARDEN!!!!!!

My seeds are all well away now, from the flowers like sweet peas and black eyed suzie to all the edibles - lettuce, radishes, spring onions, pots in bags, beetroot and every herb I can think of. I've only got a small garden but if stuff can be planted on it or in it, it will be.

I used to have an allotment for the big stuff but since moving they're like hens teeth to get in town
