Supply and demand... They're a business not a charity.

You could always start a breakers up if you think it's lucrative?

I run the used parts dept at the bike shop I work at. Had a bloke offer 25 quid for a ZX7R left caliper the other day, it's listed on ebay at £49.99 on 'buy it now'. I emailed back telling him we can't accept his offer, he replied with a stinking email saying "I thought a biker would help another biker out cos I'm skint". I emailed back telling him we're not 'bikers', we're a business with big overheads trying to make a living in troubled times. I also explained that if he wasn't happy with the £49.99 price for a perfect condition caliper he could always buy a genuine new one at £317.00.

I deal with these sort of emails all day every day. 99% of our customers just buy the part, but there's always someone who complains that prices are too high. We search listings to see what the going rate for identical parts are then price them a few quid cheaper, and we sell virtually everything in a very short time - we don't need to drop prices to compete because we're already about the cheapest there is.

Don't get me wring i'm not saying all people out there are trying to rip you off and lets not get into not willing to pay the high price for certain items,

I alone ended up forking out 130 + for the cam chain tensioners that are sat in the bike i can't even use.

All I was saying is there are certain people that for certain parts are most definatley takin the P.

TBH i just wish there were more shows like the stafford show about to get the parts you need at a reasonable price cause the guys that do market competatively are few and far between.

Just my opinion of course.

I'd expect front end parts and fairings to be governed by supply and demand. There's lots of demand because they're the bits that get damaged in an accident, and not much supply for the same reason. So I'd expect the price to be a significant fraction of what the dealers charge for a new bit.

For other parts you're paying for the labour taking them off, plus a share of a whole lot of other costs including what the scrappie pays for the bike, overheads, cost of disposal, working capital, and enough profit to keep him in business. For some items like wiring looms, getting them off in a saleable condition difficult and only worthwhile if there's a buyer waiting for one with a fist full of cash.

Buying parts off the .org is a bit different because people don't have to include a whole pile costs. They're flogging off their old parts to defray the cost of the shiny new bits they've just fitted, not as a business. Perfect for cheapass bikers like me.

Just my thoughts,

Keith.

Whilst I can see what you're saying...£317.00 for a genuine new part is fooking ridiculous and it's no wonder there's a healthy breakers/ebay market.

So you can see why I wouldn't drop the price? I think £49.99 is a reasonable price for a part in perfect condition that is £317 new... obviously he didn't. I was even going to throw in the brake pads

Aye, well when you do it yourself, you can kick yourself forever, and you hurt your own pocket for a while repairing it.
I'm not sure I could handle someone else binning my bike, and I think they'd probably leave the country rather quickly if they did.

Pegs the only one I trust with the keys, and in fairness I bite my nails until he comes back! But then hes a predictable rider, and not someone whose going to pop off down the road shout mmmuuuuhuhahahahahahaaaa!
So I guess thats a NO, to anyone thinking of asking
