I just use the cheap stuff, figure it is better to change it more often as even expensive brands will suffer from contamination at the same rate. I've never had any trouble with boiled brakes.

if youre really worried u could always go to silicone fluid like the manufacturers should put in from new. I believe u have to flush the system really well with meths and then fill with the stuff. Ok its a bit expensive but u can then forget it - a rant of mine cos I dont understand why the transport world still uses hydraulic fluid!

because silicone doesnt absorb moisture and thus instead of changing your fluid your changing your pistons!

Changing it twice a year or 18000 miles is good enough.
It won't be clear after a few months but you can get it checked using a meter at halfords if your worried.or bye a tester your self .

And what will happen to that puddle of water in there when it gets hot?

im no expert but have been told if you use dot 5 it a fit and forget as it doesnt absorb moisture or degrade if it get hot or take paint off your tank if you spill it,and as to changing brake fluid ive never felt the need, but most bike manufacturer rec every 12k

DOT4 absorbing water is actually part of what it needs to do, you don't want puddles of un-absorbed water hanging about. Not a problem in a carefully fettled road bike but some water ingress is a fact of life on the road. DOT4 can deal with it but non-water absorbing fluid is a bad thing IMO.

And another thing, fluid of infinite life is not needed as sooner or later you'll need to split the system to clean the pistons anyway.

Does DOT4 degrade when hot? It's designed to work at high temperatures.
