So what will actually happen then? Will it kill my bike to ride it with out the Reg/Rec fitted?

I am aware the battery will discharge like mad, but I can deal with that if it is the only side effect.

The worst that could happen is insulation breakdown within stator windings as the open circuit voltage will be pretty high at high RPM. It won't cause a fire though and it's pretty unlikely.
Ok lads i know my place, back to idle banter for me . Its what i was told by my local bike mech when my reg/rec went and i rode a few short journeys with it disconnected.

It'll run for as long as charge remains in the battery. I wouldnt have thought any damage would occur as Tim explained.
Get a CBR r/r they're a common upgrade.

Occam's razor- wires entering unit have got damaged.

Usually it happens at the connector block, but it doesn't have to, that spot will do the same, shorted wires have got hot - with the result you've seen. This is a mechanical failure of the cabling - not specifically a failure of the regulator rectifier.
CBR unit will work, but is far from the only unit that will be fine - I'm constantly puzzled why there's an obsession with that specific unit.

No regulator will cause open circuit of windings - no voltage will be the result, not over voltage.

No, it will be fine - 'til the battery flattens of course.

PS: GS regulator OK on SV, (except that one obviously, it may be a dab past its best now).

Could some one please have a look at this item number on eBay 190441336589 and tell me if this will be the right type?

Thanks!

Why not go for one off a GSXR? Cheaper option & does the same job.
Here are a couple on Fleabay.

Running without a reg will stop charging, you will be running total loss (like a race bike). Slowly the charge in your battery will reduce and affect the spark being generated. Eventually your bike will cough and sputter and grind to a halt when the spark is too weak to ignite the fuel.

How long would this take to happen? The battery is brand new, I fully recharged it with a trickle charger for over 12 hours over the weekend.

I want to do 4 x 4 mile journeys today.

With my Triumph it did about 10 miles before dying completely. The lights started to go after about 4 miles, then the clocks registered 888 after about 8 miles, then it stopped
