I think that motorway driving should be included in the driving test, or at the very least compulsory lessons on motorway diving before you can sit a driving test.
Preferably with a hefty section on lane discipline, observations appropriate use of speed etc.

As for the speed limits I'd like to see them set at 80.

Alcohol limits, I agree with Bibio, if you're driving you dont drink at all.

About bloody time.

While I do agree with Pete's comments about the general standard of driving and lane discipline these day (hell- it won't make much difference when you're stuck behind 3 speed limited lorrys driving next to each other anyway), I do feel that this is a good thing.

I'm wondering if using "Boosting the economy" is a bit of a false metric though- if roughly £50 frequently break the speed limit (according to the article on the Beeb), surely the estimated boost will not be seen?

Or maybe it'll be the time saving in paperwork for the police? Who knows. I'm sure most of politicians number crunching is finger in the air anyway...

That's the problem though. Roads are very dangerous places. Plebs in charge of a ton plus of metal capable of 100mph and more.

It shouldn't be about "Boosting the economy".

When your familly member dies, would you be happy being told their death was deemed acceptable by the Government because someone, somewhere made a bit of profit?

Roads and drivers should be about safety, skilled and competent driving and some level of pride in yourself and your abilities.

A licence shouldn't be a right, it's a privilege.

what's worse someone doing 50mph or someone doing 90mph on a motorway?

being a bit cynical is this just a way to get people to buy bigger cars that go faster and use more fuel? Hence raise more tax?

Interesting, but so many factors can be brought into this argument. You could crash into a a barrier at 90 and walk away, but also the same at 50
If you were doing 90 and the man in front is doing 50.....theres a problem.

So I suppose neither is as bad as each other. However with the laws of speed, for example head on crashes(different as motorways you drive all the same way) someone doing 50, crashes into someone else at 50....you are doing a 100mph collision, so if both are doing 90, theres a 180 mph colllision. DEAD Chance is a funny thing

on another thought 50 isn't illegal....90 is?

Pete you've answered the question in the OP, you know better than most on here.

I agree, the unofficial speedlimit at present is 80mph, or 90-100mph for German made cars. If they up it it'll all go up atleast 10mph and the knuckle-draggers are already incapable as things are.

Also agree with fenjer re. the test stuff. The test should be a lot harder, whether it's from my original test or IAM or biking I don't know; but I do frequent shoulder checks in the car and it's prevented a few crashes. How many other people do? Feck me they don't even use mirrors! How many do you see fannying around with them folded in or shattered. That's before you even get started on motorway driving, people are t1ts!
