Yeah the biggest problem I find is partly related to whether you have the most up-to-date maps followed by TomTom and Google probably having different logarithms for calculating routes.
I usually add extra waypoints in to force TomTom down a certain route and scan the route so I have a rough idea of where I'm going and to make sure the waypoints aren't on the wrong side of the dual carriageway etc
On the road I use the TomTom has advice but try to pay more attention to signage as it's word isn't final.
You have to wonder when people follow their satnavs and turn at level-crossings into approachign trains.

Another one here for tyre software, I find it dead easy to use works brilliant.

I've been using my Tomtom go 710 for over 2 years now and I don't use any of the spoken commands etc just the visual directions.

All I do is glance at it prior to getting to islands etc and turns are given in advance so just keep checking it, works for me anyway.

I did break my home made mount recently so gonna do another using a ball off the yoke.

Biggest bit of advice is what ever you get, do not let the device work out the route and then just blindly follow it, thats the main reason people find themselves in places they shouldn't be

car one in tank bag, or suctioned to the rev counter, with plastic bag handy. I have had mine now for about 5 years, will get another one be for this years holiday trip, cos they now come with the lifetime upgrades, which is worth more than the satnavs are.

Cheers for that,

I'm normally happy with looking at maps and planning the route, but this year following someone with Satnav was good as either of us could lead, then he could come past when needed to mark junctions etc (as it'd warn you in advance, good especially when riding at speed)

Good to know a car one will do (was thinking of trying to use the M-i-L's in my tankbag but the HG holder looks good, I don't have much space under the screen on the street)

The tomtom rider looks a lot extra for not much. Will have to look in the sales I think.

I normally ride with earplugs in, so not sure about bluetooth, how do you set it up anyway?

TomTom rider comes with a bluetooth speakers and a mic. You set the headset to pairing mode and then get the TomTom to detect it. Same as pairing a bluetooth ear piece to a mobile.

Even with ear plugs you can hear the instructions

I use a Mio cheap & cheerful car sat nav in a waterproof mount and added a headphone jack to the mono speaker.
I drilled a small hole, cut the female end off of an old 3.5mm head phone extension cable and tied a knot to stop any tug on the soldering.
Dry tested and then soldered the x2 wires to the existing speaker - simples.
Works a treat
Pics if you ask nice
