It depends on how and where you drive I would have thought? Short runs and stop and start town type driving will mean the petrol and diesels will perform similar (not the same, similar)with regards to MPG and with petrol being 5p per litre cheaper I'd go with the petrol.
Longer runs at more constant speed the MPG of the deisel will be greater by an amount that will make up for that extra 5p per litre and more.
I may be mistaken with this vehicle but I found it to be the case going from petrol to deisel ford mondeo

Anyone who says they get over 35mpg from an L200 is lying or is 5hite at maths.
I do know someone with the Barbarian that does claim to get about 40mpg, but it lives on the motorways.

As other people have hinted if your going to use it a lot get a diesel if not petrol or something different

Petrol could always be converted to LPG for about an extra £1500 - £3000 depending how Gucci you go

But the v8 would've had 3 times the torque and be under less stress, will do the same speed 5 up going up a hill

There ain't no replacement for displacement.

Plus I wouldn't have been very "rock star" to be driving from LA to Vegas in a ford fiesta. You could fit 3 of them side by side in one lane.
