Well its tester discretion.
it just says in the book
With the rear wheel on the ground observe the amount of movement and the effectiveness and security of the shock absorbers by sitting on the machine and depressing the rear suspension several times as far as possible

Consider just how bad something like an MOT worth cruiser is, from an MOT perspective don't worry about it.

From handling perspective, do worry about it

Have you got a proper SV or one of those old Curvy things? I've got a stock Pointy one cluttering up the garage, you can have that for free (well, maybe some postage)

Mine had no damping and bounced like a space hopper so i swapped it for a 6000 mile standard shock and it was a different bike.

I have a curvy. I do have some other shocks lying around - but of questionable quality.

If I was going to take the shock out, I'd probably just fit a different one.

Yes they all do until you get a decent shock

Yep mine was shagged after about 7000 mile, even fitting the cheapo Hargon was such a good mod.

I saw a nearly new Maxton or Nitron go on Ebay for under £100 recently. I couldn't justify bidding on it, but I wish I had at that price
