WB I take it you will still have the original makers plate stating the max gross weight on the modification.
I don't know if it is compulsary on a small trailer but we have to give them on the truck ones--------possibly a different set of comstruction regs--just a thought.
Remember you are limited to 60mph and no 3rd lane on motorways plus life will be easier if you get a tug and it has the plate on it.

As I said possibly different for small trailers, but an "e" mark with model must mean that in conforms to some standard.

By the way I am not trying to complicate matters just be helpful

Drats that means I need to build a trailer trailer!

Also I need some new tyres as mine are slightly perished, the current ones have a load limit of 270kg, for reference when looking is this load per tyre or is it a combined load? I.e. both tyres can combined can take 540kg

It's stupid, every so called "authority" thats to do with trailers ect contradict eachother. I read earlier that if your trailer is pre 1992 then you can conform to what ever you want to really (lights obviously ect). The DVLA don't seen to know wtf they're enforcing either.

Be careful with tyres, defective tyres are worth 3points each one. A lot of folk seem to ignore the condition of trailer tyres, I've seen plenty with cracks and cords showing through but the drivers seem to not care.

Max load rating on the sidewall is for each tyre, trailer tyres come in a variety of load ratings (plies in the tyre, for example here ), if in doubt go higher. Remember that as the trailer moves side to side it will load the tyres to more than half the total weight.

Wideboy. As it was already a trailer of some description you wont need it tested. You may also be lucky and find it has a plate or stamp already on the chassis. You can change the body of it and add to the chassis and it will still be fine, just don't go cutting bits off the chassis. We have even built a few small trailers at work and have never bothered to get any tested and there has never been any comeback as they were all built stronger than the average trailer!

the only thing i possibly will be changing on the chassis is the addition of shocks as i don't like the idea of indespension. But that would be just welding on additional brackets.

the hole thing is very strong, I'm 105kg and my mate is roughly the same, we've both jumped off the garage rafters onto the trailer together (whilst holing hands) and it barely moves (i know real technical testing). I just want to do everything legally for once as i don't want my trailer to be condemned by the side of the motorway when I have my bikes on it .
