As embarrassed as I am, I have to admit that the sounds that I was trying to get rid of came from my chain being "bone dry" as the mechanic said, now that it has had some lube it's smooth again and there are no strange sounds. Thanks for your help, I think the clutch might still be a problem, but I will try changing the engine oil first as I am not sure what is in it at the moment.
