i've sort of had this problem in a way, i used to be restricted (about 4 years ago now) and i was out for a ride with my uncle and he said would i like a go on his bandit 1200. which of course i did want a go, but had a restricted licence. so i did and i got away with it, but that's how i see it. i got AWAY with it, i was younger and a touch stupid and it was great, but i wouldn't recomend to anyone really!

Yep. The RTA regards anywhere with unrestricted public access as 'public', that includes parks, footpaths, bridleways, even your own driveway if it's used by the public (for example the postie) to reach your property.

So, Tesco's car park is a public place even though it's privately owned. But the tarmac around our office isn't because there's a security guard who controls access and (in theory) we need to display a sticker in our cars to enter. If you know someone who works on a site like that it might be an option to meet the owner there and take it for a spin round the car park.

in a tescos car park you need to be road legal

if a car park is on private land but has public access like a hotel, golf club, etc it needs a locked gate to drive on it without a license

hth

Carparks agreed, but I don't think the MOD land falls under that law. Might be wrong.

I assume you have had a good ride as a pillion? You can get a reasonable feel for a bike, to a point.

At the very least, riding other than in accordance with a licence.

LC20 for riding without L plates, expect similar for riding without restriction.

If they find out at the road side then expect the bike to be taken away, your friend will need to go secure its release provided he's still insured on it.

Correct me if i'm wrong (if I am road Wars lies to us all) but wouldn't the friend get in a heap of trouble as well for allowing the op to take the bike without being properly insured/licensed.
Otherwise the OP would get a nice custodial sentence for theft of a motor vehicle and 1 less friend
