Think being on a bike avec bike helmet is the safest way to go through Cheddar Gorge.

Was once walking alongside the road and a fist-sized lump of rock fell off the cliffs above and smacked into the ground just in front of my foot. That would've been a p*ss poor way to go.

They still have a seasonal restriction on Climbers using much of the gorge during the summer because of the risk of rocks falling and killing a grockle.

This is a shame because most of the routes are unclimbable in all but the nicest winter weather and who cares about a few grockles anyway?

Can't beat a bit of casual dehumanisation.

Nah, come off the A4 at Marlborough, then do the A346 to Burbage, A338 via Hungerford to Wantage, and B4494 to Newbury before picking up the A4/M4 again.

It's a bit round the houses, and the first half of the A338 is a bit rough and ready in places, but it's a cracking ride.
