whilst even those in the industry aren't convinced it's a truly representative test, it's the only independent one we have, so for the novice or those without real world experience it's far better than nothing, there are a few "holes" though, so be realistic in your choice, if a helmet doesn't do particularly well on star rating find out why, then make an informed choice.

I would just go for a mid priced lid that fits well.
One thing I would avoid is cheap and/or nasty flip fronts. Some like early roof helmets were actually quite dear but the chin design meant they were effectively open faced.
