I don't actually want ownership of the tree. It's rather just have someone else pay the £500 to cut it.

Find someone with a fireplace/log burner and they'll do it in exchange for the wood.

I quite fancy buying a chain saw. Chopping down the huge cactus with a machete was fun, though I did it in my shorts PJs as the thing spiked me in the thigh so I took revenge early one morning. Actually I may have to take the machete to this, which has appeared overnight next door.

any trees over your land can be cut back and branches put back on the land of the tree. I did with the trees out my back garden. And i think it's 5 years for the ownership. And the company that owned the land out the back of my house has gone bust. A reciprocating battery saw took care of the trees
