Thanks for all the replies. Some interesting installations. There's a real lack of choice on the market though for waterproof (when in use) USB sockets - either handlebar or panel mounted.

I bought one of these - linky - cut the end off and wired it to the battery via the ingnition switch. Its under the pillion seat, so if I need it I just tuck it into my tank back with the phone to charge. Keeps it all nice and safe while dry too, you could if need charge it inside your jacket or 'bum bag' too.
