There was around a litre to a litre and a half of very black oil in the engine. Took it to the garage, and they are going to have a look over the next couple of days.
It sounds really terrible, and only seems to want to fire on one cylinder. Oh well, since I don't have the knowledge to speculate, I leave it up to them to have a look and get back to me. ![]() |

If they're checking the bearings, you'd better brace yourself for a big labour bill no matter what they find... Did you try just filling it back up to normal and running it?
I only ask because I ran the yam practically dry (it was burning oil when I got it, never realised, had only 300ml of oil in it when I got it serviced) and the (inept) mechanics were pretty sure it was doomed- flushed the oil and dumped in 2 litres of nice new Shell stuff, and it was right as rain.

Worry about getting it to run on both cylinders first. Then if it makes massive clunks worry about the bearings. I dare say they will be fine. I know of a guy who ran his bike in his garage on it's racestand with no oil in it at idle for 4 mins, while lubing the chain. We stripped it down and everything was perfect. Don't worry about that yet.

Black oil isn't too bad grey oil with sparkly bits is. SEP down near Peterbourgh recondition cranks & rods for around £175 that includes bearings. They told me around a 2 week turn around. I would imagine postage to be hefty though. Then theres gaskets etc. & if you need a dealer to do it the cost rockets. A second hand motor is an unknown quantity as you don't know the history you need to use a dealer/breaker for some warranty. Cheshire motorcycle salvage have a couple around £500 + a newer one that can donate parts £275. I think they do a weeks warenty so you will need to be quick if you go there.

Sorry I haven't been back to reply, been waiting for the garage to call ...
Which they just have done. The crankshaft is damaged and the shell bearings on the rear piston are damaged. The bikes been burning oil for quite awhile, so they suggested new pistons and rings, so the bottom line cost with all new parts is around £1700 inc labour. So I asked him to push it in the corner, and I'll put it in the back of a van and take it home later this week. Think it's going to end up as a Weekend project to learn to rebuild a motorcycle engine! Now, where's those mole grips ..... ![]() |

Check out the guy on Ebay who's selling a crank and other bits... £50 but not at reserve, didn't sell last time round so it's likely to be a low-ish reserve... Might be mnore economic than a whole engine. (and if a cheap black engine comes up on Ebay, you can't have it, it's mine)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...925048630&rd=1 I'm quite tempted to buy it and break it up for resale...

Talking to guy on ebay at the mo about the bits he has left.
Got the bike back home, are you meant to be able to wiggle the conrod from side to side? That's what the rear one does. Still in two minds what to do, 2nd hand engine or rebuild. Help, need advise, going to drive the car over the winter for a change, but it's not the same! ![]() |

I was quoted over 300 quid just to strip my engine down to find out the problem yet alone the cost of the parts. |

To give you some sort of idea,
It’s going to cost about £50 in gaskets, About an hour or so to remove from the bike, Couple of hours to strip the block back, Clean out all the oil ways and such, another couple of hours, Change the busted bits Re-assembly, an hour of so, Refit in bike, Testing & adjustment, another hour. And that's if everything goes right, and you find nothing else wrong. If your good at this sort of thing, have all the bits, and don't come across anything else (have a seized or break a bolt/stud,) it could be done in a day. But probably a weekend. I would guess it would cost about £80-100, or so for the whole rebuild process (without the crank & rods cost) doing it yourself. But as I say until you split the block you're never sure what you'll find ![]() As the SV lumps are not expensive and not hard to find, I've just swapped them over. You sort of know what your getting, takes a couple of hours (Takes me about an hour to swap lumps, I even drop the engine out for other maintenance as it's so easy), and you're up and running again. I reckon on balance, if you were to get all the bits for say £50, add the gaskets and other re-build costs, another £80-100, and a weekends work then you could have a bill of £150 and the bike back on the road, however you run a greater risk of something going wrong, finding other bits busted inside, not cleaning out all the crap and causing another failure later, plus the agro of broken bolts, plastic bits etc. and also the fact your bike could be in bits for sometime, if you need something you haven't got. Or Get another lump, (generally I get one guaranteed for 30 days) drop yours out and fit the good one, in a couple of hours. You get a fixed price (done it for £250, never paid over £340, but then I know where to look, you shouldn't have much problem finding one for the £400 mark.), fixed time, easy job. I’d say unless you want to get some experience with the mechanical side of things, just swap the lump. Cheers Mark.
