Nutty's bike's a him... Of course!

A brick under the sidestand brings an SV almost level, (well, mine's is quite tall and has a slightly mangled sidestand, so maybe that's just mine) then I just pop it in gear and pull it towards me (on the non-sidestand side) by the frame. No chance it'll fall over if you're careful, and you can easily check it without help this way. But be careful when you put it back on the stand!

Or just put it on the paddock stand Or is that too obvious?

How high does your paddock stand lift it, 3 feet? If you're worried about that, try and do it somewhere where you can have the front wheel slightly higher than the rear- on a slope, maybe, or if you've got a bit of paving slab or thick plank use that...

How practical am I?

It wouldn't be as accurate, but good enough. On our DAS they told us to check the oil level on the GSs on the centrestand...
