I agree second is the best "get home" gear - pulling away in third up a hill= dodgy. Thank the lord for torquey v-twins

I've had exactly the same problem on my faired K4. The gear selector simply came off while I was riding through Edinburgh .
All you need to do is tighten it back with a narrow spanner (should be thinner than 1mm), no need to take off the retaining circlip.
