ive discussed this at appeal and its a bit of a grey area thb.
Plod say its ok cos they understand the real world issue of how easy they are to nick.
(Just dont tell em that there are one available now with mini alan key locks and even the stud that holds it on has a locknut thingy )

If they see that you dont have the tax displayed you can be reported (by pold only) for not displaying a valid disc and thus deal with the paperwork of proving it etc... tho you may still be fined for not displaying it reagarldless of the reason why. Sad but true. One of those ofences that you have commited and the result is discretionary. You just wont have to pay any back dated road tax if you have a current one.

My tax disc is displayed on my bike, but believe me no one is going to nick it unless they want to rip the tax disc holder fron the bike. I have the alan key jobby, but I put them in with superglue and lock tight. I think they might get a bit bored of trying after a few minutes. (I hope)

Dont envey you when you gotta put a new tax disc in there yourself!

Or do you plan to sell the bike with a couple of months tax left and leave to the new ownr to figure it out

I've got one too but I reckon they're dead easy just to snap off, which is why I now no longer bother.

Have to agree about it being an offence potentially but, as you said, most police once they understand the reasons won't do you for it, particularly if you have a good attitude. So I'm prepared to take my chance on that.

worst case scenario is that a traffice warden gets a copper to come over and see it and then insists that you are reported.

then its DVLA and the courts who decide to fine you or not for failing to display it.
lets just all keep our fingers crossed for ourselves eh

Yes I appreciate that technically I can still be prosecuted but I honestly think the risk is extremely small and acceptable. If it did go to court and I put forward the reasons for my actions (and also the fact that at least two Met officers condoned the situation) I think I'd most likely get away with the minimum fine as the tax is up-to-date and paid for.

I know what you mean Jonboy, just that i've had to pay the fine a good few years ago even tho it was just the sticky off the tax disc holder (in a car) had given up and some arsy copper didnt wanna let it go.
I showed i to him as i walked over to see what the prob was and why i was getting a tcket(thats waht i thought till i got closer).
His response was "Well its not properly displayed is it? Ive written it out now so you'll just have to deal with the courts"
And they wonder why peeps dont like em sometimes eh?

Dosent that meen that you could also get done for not displaying it properly on your bike if a bit of it has been turned over while inserting it?

Technically yes.... but bear in mind its only plod who can report you if they have seen it that way ... or been gragged over by a traffic warden.
