You are missing my point completely.

They are completely different bikes, designed for different purposes and therefore cannot be truely compared to each other.

What they are actually used for is neither here or there.

Do you really think that someone who wants to pose with the latest SS 600 really cares that the SV would make a better road bike for commuting? no they wont.

Compare the SV to its peers (as I mentioned above) and see how it does. Thats the test thats of real interest.

And Viney's point was that it's been done to death anyway.

Does a bit of black paint in a K5's frame make it go quicker or handle better? Nope - thought not, so why the endless tests?

None of the middleweight 600/650's in the SV's class has been significantly updated for 2005 except the Hornet (I don't count the Bandit ). I suspect that the on-road differences to the Hornet will be marginal at best but the mags will use it as an excuse to test 'em all at least twice each this year. They're all good bikes and the result will be subjective, varying from mag to mag and tester to tester.

And I'll still buy 'em and read 'em

I still buy them and read them too, but then it does fend of boredom at work (a bit like this thread is at the moment).

Its more the SS 600/1000 thats done to death, the more "everyday" bikes tend to be under represented in bike mags, or just given half a page reviews that are next to useless.

We all know that it has been done to death. There aren't enough bikes out there not to.
However, if that is the case, whats the point of checking into this forum time and time again, if people are that easily bored with the subject of bikes?

Would you compare an Ferrari Enzo with a Ford Focus?

Its the same thing.

Take them around town and the Focus would make a better car, easier to live with, economical.

Get them out of town and onto open flowing roads and the Enzo would be more fun than the focus.

Because we are sad and don't like to actually work at our places of employment.

It's a general malaise.

Why can't I be road-tester?

Muttley, Bit of an extreme example there. If you think the R6 is THAT much better than the SV (Enzo vs Focus) even on the track, you are mistaken. imho.

However, you are right about not wanting to work!

Okay, it was the first fast car I could think of (I wasn't comparing an R6 to an Enzo ).

If you substitute Lotus Elise for Ferrari Enzo its a better example.

Similar engine sizes, not a vast difference in cost, but a huge difference in practicality, handling and performance.
