I just polished a couple of rusty nuts, and the rectangular washer things from the rear axle. And I've concluded that you guys are insane to want to do that to anything bigger

Black&Decker do a metal polishing abrasive pad that is pretty good (though it wears quickly) when it has polish on it though, it is brilliant - even by hand.

Hence, 10 minutes and it looks so good. i have to admit there is a little crud left on the very front of the pipe that I still need to work on, but that is because the pad wore out. If I had another pad I could have done that.

The forks will be next, but they are going to be professionally polished and rebuilt.

Any suggestions on fork oil grade?

well if you compare it to mine

i think you've done a grand job! Rather tempted to have a go at mine now. Can't beat a well polished downpipe.

how long do you think the shine will last?

Hey, it looks like you took 4 years to get yours like that (much the same as mine was)

I suspect it will go very quickly, but I hear the trick is to Autosol regularly.

Just wondering, is the downpipe (and the rear cylinder equivalent)actually stainless steel? I know the position means it gets more dirt on it, but it's so much dirtier than the rest of the exhaust, it does make me wonder...

It is stainless, albeit crappy cheap stainless.

I only bothered with the front pipe. the rear is hard to reach and rarely seen. I might give it a go next time the rear wheel is out.

As you say, hard to see and impractical to clean regularly. A coat of (exhaust) paint to stop it rusting might be the answer.
