.
i tested my speeds against a GPS.
it was spot on up to 90 mph.

didnt go any faster than that.

thought it was only the anologue speedo's that over/under read.

I think the legal requirement is that you have a speedo that is accurate to within 10% at 30 mph or am I out of date on that?Thats also where I thought the 10%+2 thing came from. That is although the law says 30,it would be unreasonable to enforce it that rigorously given the required accuracy.Maybe Im harping back to times when common sense was more acceptable than it is today.

i asked a GATSO what percentage level of machine error he would tolerate , but he refused to comment.

I live near a 30mph urban dual carriageway that they regularly put the 'safety' camera van on. There are no signs after entering the built up area about a mile and a half earlier.

When I complained to the council (no, I didn't get caught) they said they weren't allowed to put up 30mph signs and that the 200 yard between streetlights rule was enough.

200 yds between streetlights is all well and good but I don't go out riding witha t ape measure and my speedo don't measure yds...

Another of my misconceptions then.I thought one of the few defences against a speeding nick was inadequate signing of the limit, and that could include overgrown bushes and trees obscuring the signs,or no signs visible.

I'm pretty sure that if you go from a derestricted or an area with a different restriction to a built up area, there must be signage to show the change of limit at the start, thereafter 30mph signs are unnecessary/not allowed.

As for speedos being inaccurate, when new a speedo is often up to 10% out, but it is not allowed to underread, only overread. Apparently they get more inaccurate with age, but I haven't verified that at all.

Edit: my bad, swapped underread and overread.

Slightly off topic, but is it just me or does the UK seemed to be turning into a nanny-state?

Yes if you step in front of a vehicle travelling at any speed you're likely to get hurt/killed, and the severity of injury is likely to increase with speed. However the government and authorities seem to be adopting the attitude of stamping on vehicle owners.

Where's the education of children and predestrians in general not to step into the road? - "Stop, look, listen" etc.. I'm only 25 and I remember safety adverts about cross the road, how often do you see them these days? In contrast how many adverts do you see about speed and we'll punish you?

I think that's a running topic through most of the threads around here.
