Nearly.

The word 'reed' in this context is used due to their similarity to the reeds used in certain wind instruments.

i run a highly tuned scooter on the drag strip at 34bhp it has all the porting work big carb etc but i wont bore with the details this has a large reed block and manifold the reed petals are carbon fibre the thinner they are the better they flutter = better performance but the thin ones dont last my set up i could get through reed petals very quick so if they have splintered or dont fit flush the bike wont run very well at idle also check that the carb manifold is sealed well onto the casings as a slight air leek will knacker up the set up a make idle higher.but cutting out or fuzzy feeling on the trottle will be down to crap reeds.
i had a reed block hanging together by a tread once at one race meet it nearly fell into my crank which would have been expensive as my crank was £260 and thats a scooter crank!
