Be careful, i know its not nice but get her insurance anyway mate. Dont trust anyone to pay up without legal help etc.

My teapot was knocked over by a local oik a few years ago, it was parked in my private driveway next to my house, he had lifted it up and the stand had flipped up somehow, he panicked and let go of it then ran home crying. I spoke to his parents who knew he was a tearaway and were quite used to paying for kit he had damaged, they asked me to get 2 quotes from bike shops and they would pay the cheapest. I got the quotes but the cheapest was still a few hundred quid, the kids parents were flabbergasted at the cost of the repairs and refused to pay the full amount on the grounds that i was taking the pee and its only a bike not a merc or bm car etc.

After a lengthy argument we agreed on half the payment as I was in the process of moving house and couldnt be bothered with all the hassle.
It ended with the bike getting a lower standard of repair than it should have had. I didnt keep it long after that.

Just my 2p worth, take her to the cleaners mate

I've never had any thing like this happen to me - do you think it would be a good idea to tell my insurance company what happened? I've taken plenty of pictures and I have a witness (didn't see her hit it but saw her drive out of it and thereafter).

Simon mentioned the police as well? Not sure what that achieves but does one have to do it?

We have plenty of pictures of the bike to show what damage has happened. We have already said we could do it without involving the insurance company but I think she assumed it would be £50 or something, when we told her how much just one panel on simon's bike cost she said it would have to go through insurance.

We taking it to a dealer tomorrow to get an estimate on damage.

Anything I should be doing?

sorry to hear about this

Police wont be interested as nobody was hurt, however it might not be a bad idea to phone your insurance company and explain whats happened to them

Hope you get it sorted out OK

I would look at this from another angle.

If you were moving your bike past a parked car and you slipped, stumbled, scraped a panel, you can bet your bottom dollar that there would be a serious claim coming your way, probably stating how fast you were travelling as you pushed your bike past :P

Get an estimate, deliver it to the house, and wait until you have the money in your hand.

I had an incident with a truck, a few years ago, this driver pulled across the front of my cab, he then reversed into the door and corner panel.

I was parked up at the time and I jumped out and ran to his door to pull him out He was almost in tears, explained he had just started driving, and gave me a telephone number to call. I took the registration and his name, and he left.

My company had a £11.000 repair bill, they called this number who had never heard of the driver, the police checked the truck reg and found it was not insured and the company who owned the truck had sold it

We’ve received the estimate to repair the damage she did.

It comes to the princely sum of £1107.

A very costly mistake.

That includes, tank, mirror assembly, fairing, clutch leaver (and mechanisms), handle bar end and indicator assembly and labour.

mine was similar damage after an off..
just headlights needed extra.. as they were scratched-- I wet n dried the scratches out n traded the cost with the dealer for a hugger and blue double bubble and some other bits..

what you list is similar to mine..and mine came to £1400 so she cant be thinking u r pullin her--

BUT- she will; do - cos as was said in previous posts- folk dont realise the cost of bikes, and then cos ur a "biker" they will think ur rippin them off.

good luck with it-

let us know the outcome..her insurance should be fine with it- just might drag on...

Driving down the road minding my own business, when I notice a car "parked" across the middle of the road. She had come out of a garage forecourt on the opposite side of the road and wanted to cross the road a drive in the direction I was going, but for whatever reason she wasn't moving. I approached slowly, seeing that she was otherwise engaged doing something or other I carried on. As I got level with her she started pulling out. I swerved so far to the left that I actually went up the kerb. She still drove into the rear off side door.

I stopped got her details and offered to her that she could settle without involving the insurance companies. She said she would have to ask her husband as it was his car and his insurance. I phoned him later that evening and explained to him what happened. He agreed to pay out without involving the insurance company and asked me to get an estimate of the damage.

When I gave him the estimate he then decided that it was too expensive and would have to go through the insurance after all. Not a problem, so rang my insurance company and started the process. Next thing I know is I have a letter from his insurance company wanting ME to pay for his damage. A few calls to my insurance and find out that the driver said that I had signalled that she could pull out and then carried on driving.

The end of the story is that I lost my no claims and had 50% blame attributed to me. Even when I explained to the insurance company what really happened.

The point I am trying to make is that even though at the time she accepted liability, it meant nothing to the insurance company because I had no proof.

I claimed my own revenge in the end and I'm not telling how, but it cost him dear.
You hear more and more of this kind of nonsense at it really gets by goat! It seems insurance companies quite happy nowadays to accept 50/50 liability - probably on the basis that the increased premiums from you will more than cover the cost

Sorry to hear that.

If your bike was parked legally and safely then it is very unlikely that an insurance company would even argue the toss to be honest.

It doesn't matter if liability is admitted at the scene or not and even if you got it written down I would be surprised if an insurance company would just except it and pay out if they think liability wasn't certain.

People don't realise how much damage can be done to a bike from a very small accident so they always think you are having them on. Some one hit me while filtering and the bike didn’t go over but they still did £500 worth of damage.
