As somebody else says, sounds like you have a short in your wiring loom, have a look for it chaffing against the frame and make sure that no insultation has worn off and left bare wires

I think I've got a spare loom in the garage if it turns out yours is deaded... That definately sounds like chafed/penetrated wires though, I managed to get some similiar things to happen when i was monkeying about with mine to fit the heated grips. The odometer ties in with that, the speedos don't read properly if they've got a weak power source. Did you notice the speedo needle misbehaving at all?

wiring loom under the seat will be the likely suspect, chaffs on the frame and causes things to earth out giving strange symptoms (like hazard lights when your bike doesnt have any )

I've had the hazards come on and not go off before. Was quite disconcerting when riding. I had an alarm that makes things more complicated and I had to reset it a couple of times.

I'll be checking the bike for shorts...

problem solved. bare wire. took the garage a day and a half to find but they only charged 20 quid for it
