You might need a filter wrench to get it undone, try undoing it by hand, the oil filter threads into the engine

Thanks, what about removing the cap though, should that just screw off too?

Huh?

Are you sure you are looking at the correct part. It's the round canister that faces forward from the fron of the engine. There is no "cap".

Ah right, hadn't taken the new one outta the box yet so thought that was an external cap.

No, don't look like I'm getting the old one off by hand

Don't worry, run down to your local Halfords/B&Q and get yourself a Boa Constrictor as it's a lot easier to use and cheaper than a oil filter wrench, and I don't mean a snake, see here. I find the baby one more than good enough and they only cost £5 from Halfords.

Hi Valman,

Thanks for the tip but just phoned the g/f's dad and he's got an attachment for the filter. He's also got a rivet tool for the chain he's gonna sort me out with

Just hammer a large screwdriver through the side of the filter and use that to remove it.
