I suppose part of the problem is that one person's 'lumpy idle' is another person's 'they all do that sir'.

That said, whilst some things are painfully obvious to those in the know, there are many who honestly believe they are also in the know - but just with dubious information they believe to be correct.

It's then simply down to the type of person you are and how much you trust others and their opinions.

It's difficult to re-educate someone who genuinely believes, for whatever reason, they are right and the information they are imparting is correct. Espescially if they have no real frame of reference yet trust their original source. Jumping on their error may well only get them defensive about it rather than receptive to alternatives.

I applude your desire to see accurate information given to those who need it, and your concern for those recipients.
Yet like others have said, it is a two-way street. Learning is not only in the mouth that speaks, but in the ear that hears.
(Oh dear god, just shoot me now, I'm starting to sound like a fortune cookie!)

I dont think there's an especial problem. You soon get corrections and a piece of erroneous advice will as also said above draw correction or at least another opinion. Erroneous advice can sometimes perhaps be an advantage as it sparks further conversation. It also helps the very people who might think they know and then find they dont, we all do that.

Ok, Im certain there have been a few instances where some advice was totally wrong.

But going by the first post, I'm wouldnt be allowed to say what I beleive is correct (as perhaps I dont have an SV), or perhaps because I havent owned bikes all my life.

Sometimes someone saying 'I think you do it this way....' is better for someone who needs help than silence until a 'guru' comes along.

So thats the disagreeing bit!

On the agreeing bit I think a bit more use of 'Im not entirely sure but...' would be helpful in some quarters, i.e. well intentioned but qualified help. Thats especially true mabe in Tuning and tweaking. But this is posted in Bike Talk & Issues, so anything pretty much goes here, I would have thought.

Lets not stifle participation or stop folks putting their hand in the air.

Question...How do you know the advice you are giving is wrong till someone tells you so Advice is an opinion, everyone has one( I know viney has a saying for this)

P.s I hope ppl are not knowingly giving bad advice though

I openly admit I have the mechanical knowledge of a pidgeon, I ask stupid questions but I dont give advise on mechanics because I know jack**** about it - the end.

All I know is I turn the key and as if by magic the engine starts, then I rip off into the distance! Im a rider not a mechanic.

I dont think anyone is qualified to give ' the facts ', there are plenty of ways to skin a cat, what you believe to be fact may only be your perception of what is true and in fact is complete ********. As we are seeing in this forum.

I agree with the all seeing eye whatever his name his, oh yeah jonboy thats it! its up to you what you choose believe!
