Yes, because he was really asking:

Should I get a Duke 749S, a Buell CityX or an SV100S?

Hmmm what can I say, over the last few weeks I've been looking in MCN and i'am spotting a few 749 and the S for sale. God it's tempting and some of the bikes I've seen at £6 to £6.5 I'am close to having a test ride on one, but i'am a little taller then steve(younger & better looking) so i'am not sure it will be right fopr me.

Oh the one at £6.5 was at 675miles and all Duke mods(were alot)...but yellow
We shall see you never know

I forgot to add my totally uninformed opinion on the Ducati- I'd get a 748. No offence Peter! The 749's a superb bike but the 748, 916 and co are true icons. If I were buying a toy, it's what I'd get. If I were buying a working bike, I'd get an SV. Oh, I did.

Really want to like the 749 but I tried the clutch in the showroom and bloody hell is it heavy! What's worse, I'll probably mostly be riding 3 miles to & from work in traffic - far from ideal

On the flipside, I can imagine getting really fed up with hanging on for dear life on the CityX if I decide to go on any longer rides or have to house-sit for parents again, which results in a 30-mile commute each way.

Problems, problems.....

After having 4 bikes in 3 years, here's Jelsters guide to sorting yourself the right bike.
  • Make a list of ALL of the bikes you fancy
Make a list of the things that you want from the bike (practicality, looks, comfort, running costs, insurance etc)
Delete the ones you can't afford
Go to a dealer, sit on and discuss the remaining bikes
Delete the bikes you don't think are suitable
    Test ride the remainder
Score them against your list of attributes
Ride the top 2 or 3 again
See what deal you can get

You should end up with a winner. Don't forget to include your SV in the list and compare what the others give you against the SV.

You need to make sure that you want to spend the additional cash on a new bike, or just spend some more on the SV....

.

That's why it's called Personal Taste.

You can't really compare a 749S and CityX, they are two very different bikes, completely different riding styles and power delivery.

As has been said it depends what you want from your bike.

I bet you'll love the CityX, it's a hoot to ride.

Can't comment on the 749S as I haven't had the pleasure of riding one.
I believe that opinions were asked for - I gave mine !!

No offence taken Northwind. The previous range of bikes are indeed icon's and are more immediate eye candy. However the "9" series grows on you VERY quickly. Add the fact that they are now actually far better bikes all round I would not take the step back.
Yes the single sided swing arm, first underseaters for the real world and that two eyed look at the front, very tastey. But my bike puts out more horses than the 916 did in it's hey day and the overall new package is so much better.
The guy who has had lots of breakdowns etc and the bike looks rough? He might be an all weather rider but is he really looking after it?

I am not at all ashamed to tell you that me and my bike have no intention of ever seeing rain, road salt etc.
My bike is about 16 months old and looks brand new cos I love to pamper it.After all what would be the point of moving to Southern Spain otherwise? Oh boring it's gonna be 35º again tomorrow!
