True, the whole thing will be run/monitored by a 3rd party - some nameless, faceless "road charging partnership" like they have with the cameras right now. And like scameras, they'll be in it to make a profit and not to truly make the congestion problem any better.

That's how it's done these days - they'll splash out on making the system work, then they'll expect the govt. to give them a licence for however long toi extract back their costs, plus a good profit each year.

Jeez - even Livingstone admitted that the only reason the congestion charge went up and is going to be expanded is that the "partners" haven't made as much profit as they thought and so demanded ways to increase their profits. Sad state of affairs but none of the politicians seem to have the balls to stamp it out...

Fortunately for me, I work for one of those companies, so ker-ching! (Not that any of their criminally large profits ever reach my pockets )

Anyone who swallows the £1.43 per mile examples wants their head read... Though I agree it'll definately work out more expensive for many motorists. However, to say that the only justification for doing it would be to raise funds overlooks that this could be a seriously effective way of cutting down congestion in crowded areas, certainly far more effective than current congestion charges.

I'm against it because of the implications of having what's effectively a tracer mounted in my bike or car, myself. If they can find a reliable method that doesn't work this way, I'm all for it. I am right that it's a transponder system being floated, right?

It will not be 1.43 per mile for every mile covered on a motorway, It will be paid at peak times, in congested traffic areas. It will force the 4x4 school taxis off the road, it will force the local motorway user off the road, the ones who join the motorway, belt across to the third lane and cause havoc, then force their way off at the next junction.

In Germany they have already introduced the MAUT system which reads number plates and makes a charge to an onboard box, or you pay at a terminal on the motorway, or even on the internet before your journey commences.
