I had my tyres at normal road pressures on my recent trackday. After 2 sessions i was virtually given a tellingoff by one of the racers there. He put my tyres (pilotpowers) to 29psi front and rear.

The grip levels were unreal after that!!!!

It was a mad hot dry track though

Im running a racetec /rennsport combo on my race SV
When the tyres are new I'll run em at 29 rear and 27 front.
I try to get 3 meetings out of a set of tyres so I drop the pressures a tadd to compensate for the heat cycles.
If you want an UNREAL riding experience in the rain--try a set of full on wet race tyres. On a recent practice day it bucketted down at lunchtime--I did one session on the metzlers then put on the wets-You just will not believe the grip you have in the wet

As many have already said, the pattern of road tyre has been designed to be at its most effecient at the standard pressure settings.

I reduced my tyre pressures from a normal 36/36 (GSXR600) to 31/30. When I was lucky enought to have a Niall MacKenzie as my track day tutor (between 3 of us!) at Donington, he said we shouldn't worry about tyre pressures at all at the speed we were going. Considering we were mid runners in the advanced group and it was a very hot day, I'm guessing you'd need to be running at a pretty fast rate for the pressures to make any difference. That said, if it improves your confidence then you'll be faster.

I mate had his tyres filled with nitrogen - as it is water vapour free apparently you don't need to drop your pressures anyway, as the gas does not expand like air
