Northwind, I've thought about keeping my stock rear shock to do exactly what you have, use it as a spare whilst my (hypothetical) Ohlins is off to be reconditioned.

How long/well does the original last if it's not in use? EG would you say regular use is a far greater degrader of quality than time (so if you put it away in storage, using it again 2 years later, it won't be noticeably worse)?

Strange, but my shock still feels overdamped instead of underdamped. I say this having ridden my pal's older Monster 620i.e. and his current 749 (and I've climbed aboard some older jap bikes whose shocks are REAL crap by now) . The SV's shock still feels hard. Maybe the fender keeps the muck off it and so it keeps its good shape...

Ive still got my original shock that i took out at 15k, i might chuck it away as i have a better one installed that is unlikley to ever be serviced. I might also change the shock i currently have and then keep the other one as a spare.

i have a suposedly ZX686 '01 shock but i found someone on ebay selling what looks identicle and has it as a ZX9 Ninja shock. I am trying to get a proper '04 ZX686 shock that should fit nicer than what i have at the moment.

Absolutely no idea But mine's just come out of storage after something like 16 months and doesn't seem to be any worse than it was when it went away- that is to say, it's not very good, but perfectly functional.

Ive got a ZX6R B1H Shock........

But its attached to my ZX 6R! so you aint having it!

Actualy, thats a good question..... how often should they be serviced ? and is it expensive ? would it be cheaper to buy a new one ? the one that was on the bike looks like its been through WW3 !

As I understand it, the action of the oil being forced though small valves in the shock at high speed and the friction that occurs produces heat. It's this heat that causes the oil to break down into (from what I've seen coming out of old fork legs) what is effectively water... and a lovely green/brown sludge! So anyway, the point is just leaving the shock in storage shouldn't do any harm, putting miles on it will.

As for rebuilds, apparently you should expect to pay around £50, although take that with a pinch of salt as I've not had it done - just a figure I seem to rememeber hearing on the grape vine. I've seen every 15,000-20,000 miles or there abouts as figures for how often this should be done... however, really it depends how hard the bike is ridden. Since any shock you get will probably be adjustable, as the damping goes off you can just turn up the damping on the adjusters. When you cant turn it up anymore, then you know it's time for a rebuild

I think i was told that the ZX shocks are not easly rebuidable like the SRAD & GSXR shocks, they have to be cut open and wealded closed again or something odd like that. Probably easier to get a new one off ebay.

I have been but putting it off(seeing if I can push it to spring) course not really looking forward to riding on the original shock.

Thing is I'm running about 10mm(atleast) more ride height at the back and the front is maybe 2mm lower(that is with the GSXR forks being shorter). So that is quite a difference compared to stock

Like you said the OE never really felt that bad but after having used two different after market shocks( Ohlins and Technoflex) you would not want to go back.
It's not that bad... But the damping adjustment wanders all over the place, sometimes, which is a pain in the ****. Also, it's made it pretty much impossible to find a compression setting that's the right balance of high and low (since the Ohlins doesn't have seperate adjustment for those).

I'm riding like a big girl at the mo Like you, it's down at the front and up at the rear- though not as much as it was with the Ohlins in- so there's plenty of potential for Unexpected Terror there I think. So I'm just going to resist temptation for a couple of weeks.
Yeah On mine I've been gradually upping the damping but I'm just going to send it off.
Spoke to the place that is going to do mine an dthey can get it done within a day or so of receiving it so provided the weather co-operates 'off' this weekend and 'back in' the next.

So how long have you got to ride like a big girl (as opposed to a liltte girl ).

Cheers
Ben

ps what are you going to do about the front . One wheel .
